Purpose
The purpose of this article is about sitting in the seat of the scornful. This can be as simple as inviting your non-Christian friends over for a party and allowing them to be themselves. If you allow your home to be a place where your non-Christian friends (who are generally scornful of God) run the show, then you are compromising. If they are allowed to influence the tone of the party, with their immoral behavior and talk, then you are sitting in the seat of the scornful. If you accomodate them by allowing unmarried people to sleep in the same room in the same way as married folk, then you have compromised. If you allow or participate in smoking marijuana or get drunk with your friends, you are compromising. If your friends use God's name in vain, and you don't mention it on occasion, then you are accomodating them. You are sitting in the seat of the scornful.
Introduction
Doing what is right means avoiding the seat of the scornful. Doing what is right will make you unpopular with your non-Christian friends and aquaintances. This is the path of the difficult choice between pleasing God or pleasing man. Psalm 1 reminds us to avoid sitting in the seat where the non-Christian runs the show. This may be unavoidable at work, but when you have your free time and when it is your home, then you are more responsible with your choices. If you go to a bar, you are generally going to a place where the scornful run the show. This may not always be the case. It depends a lot on the place and the people you go with. Jesus was not one to hang out with the scornful, but he was also known to be a friend of sinners. To avoid sinners is another mistake. Christians are supposed to be in the world but not of it. It is very easy to be avoiding non-Christians completely or to be compromising your values when you are with non-Christians. The hard thing is to be "light" and "salt" when you are with non-Christians. If you invite some non-Christian friends to your home for a party you can let it be known that you have Christian principles in many ways.

When I was young, before the NIV was invented, I memorized Psalm 1 in the KJV. I am sorry but I am going to post the Psalm here in KJV (because I like it for Psalm 1).
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
